Day 16 completed Amazing great attractions today in the mid section of the ride. In one weeks time we will be completed the Tour. Been great.
Todays we had the Falkirk wheel, A wonderful canal tunnel that we walked thru, then canals, then The kelpies'.
Have look at the photo below of the Kelpies-apparently a mythical Scottish beast, like a horse that lives in the water.
Below are the actual stats for the day. A little less km today than I thought for we were doing which was good. Had a few route changes coming into Stirling. Notes that the ascents is always actually much more than the Koomot software predicts from the maps. Predicted 630m actual was 832. Add basically 25 to 33 % on prediction each day and you get the actual. My overall log is consistent with this, so is more lumpy the route we are taking. Less than NZ but not flat either.
Scotland has an open land access thing which is different to NZ and England. As long as you cause not problem and don't interrupt a farming business you can can for example go over a farm. Our route took us to a farm track but the farmer made us unwelcome, so we had to divert and then the road we went as alternative was closed, but we got thru in the end, thanks to lovely workman allowing us, although we only struck them when we had cycled a couple of Kms and they working at the far end of the diversion.
Scotland is famous for aggressive mosses and sandflies-So we now have a daily Midge report. This is the first report. I have bough my" smidge "to rid the midges. Yes the spray is call smidge 😀.Did't have any today as forecast 😀
Leaving New Lanark and going for the day
passing thru Lanark a few kilometres away
Lee -Anne sent me this photo-we are at similar latitude now. This is somewhere near the Lochs. Lee -Anne has had a dreadful cold but is out and about now. Great Photo Love. We are going to catch up at Fort William on Thursday
More wind farms, just everywhere
This a photo with the names of the hills in the background, Nick has some fancy IT that does this, really good with photos and local knowledge. He is our knowledge and fix it man. Very handy
views as we hit the firth of Fourth ? well the ocean somewhere, a little industrial and we haven't seen much of that
A bit of the Oil industry
This was to prove a long Canal and due to it being a wee slippery we walked-I suppose 1 km . Singing at Times with deep voices for echo. DAYOO-freedom comes and we want to go home, a bit of harry Belafonte-it really echoed
The sun even came out. we had a few showers latter
Is this what I think it is ?
Canal boat preparing for the big lift. I was offered a ride and would have taken it but didn't want to slow our team down. I asked if we could change the route to take in the Falkirk wheel and Andy and Gwen arranged that. Oh I was so grateful as we all were.
the Canal boats are in the wheel now and preparing to be lifted down
Took a while to organise but about to move
Its moving and so did we a little way to get better views
team enjoying the sun. been a little rare
saw this guy but before I could get forced he was off
The Kelpies are huge and so well done, Surrounded by a canal and water. this the view as we ate our lunch from the carpark and rain came again. A light shower
Our crew ready to resume our ride after lunch
We came in under a heavy shower, but shows where we stay in the map and our location in relation to Wallace memorial and Stirling castle which we only saw both from a way out in the distances and mist
This is a cut and paste of the Wallace memorial from the internet. Wallace s brave heart. the Mel Gibson character and is a National treasure. He defeated the English . He was subsequently caught and cut up. revenge I suppose and his body sent in pieces around the villages and towns
Another internet cut and paste of Stirling castle. It is on this hill and looks down on Stirling. Hopefully we will have better views as we bike out of Stirling this morning
