Photo from our accommodation in Broad street, from our window in the centre of Oxford looking at Trinity College
See The red door below, that's the entrance to the Accommodation which is on the first floor, overlooking the Street. It was really well appointed inside and had everything you wanted and roomy. Being an old building, floors were uneven and stairs were steep. I enjoyed my stay here and we were not under pressure for time which was nice.
Just up the road about 2 addresses to the right is the place were OXFAM started. From Oxford to relieve poverty was the initial aim. Across the road was Trinity College and loads of colleges in this area. The college system at Oxford is unusual. The whole educational system is way different from almost all universities with the focus on very close 1 to 1 tutoring of students.
Oxford has alway been a cycling city and thru broad street was a new separated cycling lane but visitors didn't quite get that. See the number of bikes, well look at the number at the Train station.
This you tube video contains video of the street we stayed in. Really interesting city. David Clover sent to me this morning. thanks David . look at the footage at about 35 sec to 1 minute in. this is at the corner of the street and statues on the fence are still there, but have been restored . We asked David was Oxford bombed during the war and the answer was no as he said that Hiller wanted it to be his London and capital city and he have benhelim place, Churchill was born there. today the palace is a world heritage site.
These two kids from Gissie, decided to hitch a ride on an on off bus for a while and took a few pics but didn't have best seats for photos. They were very quick awkward shoots.
The limestone from different regions have different colours, the light coloured in Oxford and the Cotswolds is distinctive. If you had come to Oxford 40 odd years ago though and like London they would have been covered in black soot from emissions of cars and heating. Following adoption of new laws around emissions they have cleaned up the buildings and the buildings look so much nicer. This was the same when we visited in 2012, we were astounded how different London looked.
This was an old Roman fort Hill. The romans built forts I days march from one fort to the next. Many cities, Oxford included were also walled cities.
Just around the corner from Broad street where we stayed was this old building. It's actually a Pret manger, cafe that has healthier food and we ate in there the next day. see the floors going all different directions
This is Christs College, from one side. Huge parks at the back and river side. Walked around and to the pub by river to watch soccer, Euros were on .
Some local cattle.
On the Upper thames (I think)
Young rowers having fun.
Lee -Anne as we ate outside but had to run inside when the rain started, but I only missed 30 secs of soccer in changing locations. Nice flowers eh!
Some local guy 😀
They did a selfie
After the soccer walking home.
All the above photos were from our afternoon in Oxford after coming down fromManchester on Monday morning arrive about lunchtime.
The photos below relate to other wanderings around Oxford and a really pleasant catch up with David and Linda Clover. David is the son of Mums cousin, Tony and Helen who we meet in Old Portsmouth back when we lived in Uk all those years ago.
Inside the court yard of one of the colleges which were really close to where we were staying.
Selfie with David and Linda, they live in Oxford and have for years since early 1970's.
